Inside Bordeaux Jane Anson - 27 Jun 23
Ceamy smoked caramel and ripe red cherry fruit character, reflecting an exuberant vintage where the osyter shell salinity of the limestone soils gives welcome definition to the fruit. As it opens mint leaf and cocoa bean add focus and lift, as does an aromatic wave of rose petal and cloves. 100% new oak, with part of the ageing in larger sized oak casks. Michel Rolland consultant, with Hubert de Boüard also from this vintage. Pierre and Axelle Courdurie´ owners, in organic conversion.

The 2018 Croix de Labrie is very high-toned on the nose, just as I found in barrel, though thankfully I do not discern the nail polish scent that I remarked on back then. Still, it does note quite possess the flow of the better Saint-Émilions this vintage, feeling rather constricted. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly bitter entry, a light charcoal note infusing the black fruit and fine delineation on the finish. Not bad, although I have encountered better vintages from this estate in recent years.

Saint-Emilion Fine Wine

Saint-Emilion

Saint-Émilion, a historic Bordeaux Right Bank appellation, is known for rich, robust red wines primarily from Merlot and Cabernet Franc. These wines feature deep colour, lush texture, and complex flavours of ripe plum, black cherry, blackberry, with hints of chocolate, licorice, and earth. They have smooth tannins and balanced acidity, making them both approachable and age-worthy. Top producers include Château Cheval Blanc, Château Ausone, Château Angélus, and Château Pavie, all renowned for their exceptional quality and diverse expressions of Saint-Émilion's bold character.
